Design Methodology 2: Weekly Capstone Updates (Week 1 &2)
Week 1:
Capstone — I’m both excited and terrified to start it. I’m excited to get to work on a project that I’m passionate about, but I’m scared that I won’t end up liking what I choose. To help identify clues that may lead me towards a topic, I did a modified version of the 6-Minute Diary. Writing down 7–10 things that I did and saw ended up being kind of difficult. Obviously, I could think of things, but a lot of my ideas felt pointless and insignificant to write down.
The Purpose/Project activity that we did in class was interesting. Step 2: Discern Your Purpose resulted in some deeper reflection, and I feel like I got some helpful information out of it.
As we continue working, I hope I am able to identify a clear project that I am eager to work on for several months.
Week 2:
As we wrap up Week 2 of capstone, I am still left with a lot of uncertainty and uneasiness. I have such a desire for my capstone to be unique and impactful that I am putting a lot of pressure on myself. I keep having to remind myself that we are still in the early phases of capstone.
Last weekend, I completed the next phase of the Purpose/Project worksheet: Step 3: Play with Projects. I struggled to think of concepts because, like I mentioned before, I so badly want to create something new. In the end, my ideas did end up feeling very generic.
On Monday, May 17th, we split up into groups to talk through our butterfly/Venn diagram that we based off of our Purpose/Project worksheet. It felt refreshing to verbally share ideas and thoughts aloud. Through this experience, I do feel like I identified one topic that has sparked some interest in me: life coaching. From the start, my hope for my capstone has been to inspire and motivate my audience, and life coaching feels like it would fit within this topic. I keep thinking of videos that I have watched in the past that have left me feeling motivated and/or inspired to create a change.
There are other topics that I still want to explore though, such as fitness, nature, animals/wildlife, and traveling. Moving forward, I am thinking that there may be an opportunity to combine aspects of life coaching/inspiration/motivation with one or more of these other topics.
