Design Methodology 2: Weekly Capstone Updates
Week 7:
This week I spent an extensive amount of time delving more into secondary and primary research.
In last week’s post, I wrote about how conducting interviews with therapists may not be a necessity. After discussions in class and being challenged to think about the benefits of conducting an interview, I have decided that I will interview individuals in the field of psychology. Interviews have not been conducted yet, but I plan on interviewing a certified, practicing therapist and a graduate student that is studying psychology.
This week, I spent more time focusing on collecting and reviewing secondary research sources. First, I found numerous websites that discuss the negatives, as well as positives, of social media and its connection to mental health. Then, I started going through each source and took notes. One commonality that a lot of the articles mentioned was that social media causes FOMO (fear of missing out). While this didn’t surprise me, I forgot that there was an acronym for it, and I kept seeing it.
I also watched a couple of TED Talks that were very interesting. I usually forget about finding videos for secondary information, but I am glad that I took the time to find and watch them. The TED Talk by Bailey Parnell called Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health? was beneficial to watch. I took a lot of notes based on what she said and the information that she provided. I found that narrowing my target audience down to college students 18–24 years old was smart because that demographic is the most active on social media.
Last, I finalized my survey this week and have begun sending it out to college students. Over the next week or so, I hope to have a more extensive list of responses.
